About Beauty Industry In Vietnam

Vietnam is one of the countries with the highest average wage growth rate in the Asia–Pacific region  (Statista, July 2024). Increasing disposable income and the rise of e–commerce are driving up  demand for consumer goods, especially cosmetics and personal care products. It is projected that  by 2024, the revenue of the beauty and personal care market in Vietnam will reach USD 2.66 billion,  with a CAGR of 2.97% (Statista, 2024 – 2028). In which, the personal care segment dominates the  market share, estimated at approximately USD 1.17 billion, accounting for more than 43% of the  total market share. According to another report by Statista in March 2024, this year, each  Vietnamese person will contribute USD 0.40 to sunscreen products. The sunscreen market in  Vietnam is estimated to reach revenue of USD 40.18 million in 2024 and will grow at an impressive  CAGR of 6.62% during the period from 2024 to 2028. This shows the increasing interest of  Vietnamese people in protecting their skin from the harmful effects of sunlight.

In recent years, Korean brands have dominated the Asian cosmetics market, and Vietnam is no  exception. Korean cosmetics (K–beauty) have become the most popular trend in Vietnam, even  surpassing their popularity in other countries. Alongside the predominance of international brands,  the Vietnamese cosmetics market is seeing a strong rise in domestic brands. These local brands are  gradually asserting their position by offering high–quality products at affordable prices, particularly  those made with organic ingredients from natural sources (Statista, December 2023).

E–commerce has experienced remarkable growth in Vietnam over recent years. Among the most  frequently purchased items online, cosmetics consistently rank high, particularly in big cities.  Innovations in the beauty market, such as virtual try–on services, beauty technologies utilizing  artificial intelligence and augmented reality, are expected to enhance the online shopping  experience. This trend is anticipated to enable e–commerce to surpass traditional retail stores and  become the premier destination for beauty products in the future (Statista, December 2023).

In Vietnam, the production and distribution of cosmetic products are strictly regulated by the Drug  Administration of Vietnam (DAV) under the Ministry of Health. Currently, a wide variety of cosmetic  products from numerous brands and diverse origins are available on the market, alongside the  emerging e–commerce. In response to this landscape, the Ministry of Health proposed new  regulations for cosmetic management on November 11th, 2023. These proposals aim to reduce and  simplify administrative procedures, enhance the quality of domestically produced cosmetics to  increase their competitiveness with imported products, and improve the safety of cosmetic  products. These measures are intended to ensure that consumers have better access to safe and  high–quality cosmetic products. Once these proposals are approved, local brands will have more  opportunities to compete in this market. At the same time, regulations on ingredient verification  and quality control will become stricter, providing better safety for end users.

Moreover, the trend towards sustainable development is significantly impacting Vietnam’s  cosmetics industry. Vietnamese consumers are interested in cosmetics made from natural  ingredients, environmentally friendly, and packaged in recyclable materials. According to a 2023  survey by Rakuten Insight, 84% of Vietnamese consumers aged 25 to 44 are willing to pay more for  sustainable products. The survey also revealed that more than half of those respondents consider  purchasing sustainable or environmentally friendly products to be very important.
